Industrial Temperature Support

Overview

CompuLab boards are designed and validated for operation in wide temperature range.

Manufacturers of VLSI components usually do not rate them for the -40°C to +85°C range, mainly because market demand is low. Certification tests are therefore performed by CompuLab. Most tested components are found to be compatible, while components showing temperature sensitivity are replaced by compatible counterparts.

Small components, such as capacitors, resistors and oscillators, as well as small integrated circuits used in CompuLab boards are usually rated by manufacturers for a wide temperature range.

The testing method depends on the selected temperature range:

RangeTemp * Description
Commercial0°C to 70°CSample units are tested at the lower and upper temperature limits.
Individual units are not tested for temperature compliance.
Extended Tested
(TET)
-20°C to 70°CEvery unit undergoes power-up and a short built-in test for the lower
limit (-20°C) qualification. Extended temperature certification is available
for all product configurations.
Industrial Certified
(TIC)
-40°C to 85°CBoards are assembled with components certified by Compulab for
industrial temperature range. Sample boards of each batch are tested
in thermal chamber.
Important notes:
- It is user’s sole responsibility to test board's operation in full temperature
range.
- Full testing by CompuLab can be ordered separately at a later stage,
provided that original order included TIC option, i.e. that boards were
ordered with components certified for industrial temperature range.
Industrial Tested
(TIT)
-40°C to 85°CBoards are assembled with components certified by Compulab for
industrial temperature range. Using dedicated test suite, each unit is
extensively tested at both the lower and upper temperature limits and
at one or more midpoint(s). Most on-board peripherals are covered
by the test.
* Temperature as measured on the hottest spot of the board or heatsink (if relevant).
** -40C and 85C are typical temperature limits for most CompuLab products.
Upper and lower temperature limits may be vary for certain products.
Refer to product specifications.

Test Coverage

The test is performed under the Linux operating system. Tested features: CPU, RAM, SSD, serial port(s), graphics controller, ethernet, extension card interfaces, USB, sound, bluetooth and WiFi. Tested features vary according to product type. Certification test does not include RTC battery, or any other batteries in general. Batteries are removed before the test and are re-populated after the test. Batteries used by CompuLab are not rated for temperature range wider than 0°C to 70°C.

Industrial Temperature Certification Procedure

  • Programming the tested unit with industrial temp test suite.
  • Cooling without power, at least 20 minutes while the test chamber is set to the lower temperature limit.
  • Power up test in cold-start condition.
  • Testing the features listed above, using a dedicated test suite.
  • Drying the board.
  • Heat up to maximum temperature limit.
  • Power up test in cold-start condition.
  • Testing the features listed above, using a dedicated test suite.
  • Reprogramming the unit back to standard contents.
  • Running ATP at room temperature.

Sales Terms

The yield of industrial temperature certification can vary significantly. CompuLab therefore applies rules to enable efficient implementation of this service, balancing the risk of process yield uncertainty. Ordering products with industrial temperature certification is limited to the following options:

Option 1 (recommended):

Order stock configurations. Product configuration kept in stock can be ordered with certifications for wide temperature range. This is the preferable option because CompuLab can backup this order by screening boards which it regularly keeps in stock.

Option 2:

To inquire about industrial temperature certification for a custom configuration please email sales@compulab.co.il.
